The POD Express is small enough to fit in a gig bag pocket, and it’s more capable than it looks. It won’t hold a hundred presets or run eight effects at once, and for a worship set that’s fine. Most sets come down to three sounds. Get those three right and you can play the whole service without touching anything but a footswitch.
The three sounds you need
- A pad or swell sound. For intros, quiet verses and the space under a prayer. Long reverb, a delay with plenty of repeats, and a soft attack so notes bloom instead of landing.
- A clean rhythm. Your everyday sound. Clear, a little compressed, with enough delay to add movement and not so much that fast strumming smears.
- A lead. A touch more gain and a longer delay, so single notes sing and carry over the band.
Start with the amp
Ambient playing is mostly reverb and delay, so the amp underneath needs headroom and a clear top end. On POD Express the Chime amp, in the style of a Matchless DC30, is the usual choice for worship: it stays clean when you play softly and adds a little edge when you dig in. For the lead, a smoother, more sustaining amp works better.
Set the ambience for the room
- Big reverb needs a slow part. The longer the reverb, the fewer notes it can carry. Save the huge settings for swells and held chords.
- Match the delay to the song. Tap the tempo in. A dotted-eighth delay that’s out of time is worse than none.
- Less in a small room. A room with its own echo adds to yours. If the sound is washing out, turn the reverb mix down before anything else.
Level the three against each other
This matters more than any single setting. Play each preset in turn at the volume you’ll use on Sunday. The pad should sit under the band, the rhythm should sit with it, and the lead should step forward by a clear but small amount. Adjust the preset levels until switching between them doesn’t make the sound engineer reach for your fader.
Packs to start from
You can build all of this from scratch, or start from presets made for exactly this job:
- Worship Essentials: the three sounds above in one pack. Pad swells, a soaring lead and a clean, dynamic rhythm.
- Pads & Swells: three lush pad and swell presets with long reverbs and modulated delays, for when you want more than one texture.
- Matchless DC30 Clean, Drive & Ambient: clean, drive and ambient on the Chime amp.
- Worship Acoustic: three presets for when you’re leading from an acoustic.
Playing bass on the team? There are POD Express Bass packs built for worship too.
Before Sunday
Load the presets, play through each one with the guitar you’ll actually use, and adjust the EQ and gain for its pickups. Save a copy of each preset before you change it. Then run the set once at home with a click. If you can get from the first song to the last on three footswitch presses, you’re ready.
